Hey guys, I have a 2006 Ninja ZX-6R. It is my first bike and I bought it with only 6000 miles on it. The bike ran strong for the first month and then the battery went bad so I replaced it. All has been well for about a month since the battery change, but lately I have had some idle issues. The first problem occurred about a week ago when I backed down a drive way and my bike made a funny noise. When I turned it on its idle rpm was about 2.3k, which was noticeably high from my usual 1.4k. I rode it home (about 3 miles away) and messed around on a hill going down until the bike reset itself and the idle rpm was around 1.1k. This was a little low to me so I found out about the idle adjust knob on the left side of the bike behind the fairing. I adjusted it slightly until the idle rpm was steady around 1.4 to 1.5k rpm.
This held very strong for about a week and a half, with several distance rides. I had no problems at all for a this week and a half. Just yesterday I started my bike and the bike would rev up to about 2.3 to 2.5k rpm and then down to around 1.7 to 2.0k rpm. After a while it would steady out to around 1.2 to 1.3k. I would ride the bike for a good three minutes then when I would pull in the clutch the rpm would sink to around 500 and barely stay alive (it died only once after I came to a stop and monitored the bike).
At a stand still I tried to adjust the idle control knob again but this time it didn't work at all. I took the bike back home and let it sit for a while. When i turned it on it immediately revved up and down again and finally stabilized around 1.3k. I let it sit until the temperature was 203 degrees, and then tried to adjust the idle speed with the knob, but again it wouldnt work. I drove the bike around for five or six minutes and everything seemed to be find but every once and a while I would pull in the clutch and the rpm would sink to around 500 or lower and almost die. I would give it some gas and the bike would eventually stabilize itself back around 1.2-1.3k rpm.
So, I'm not sure what is going on. I would say that the idle control knob is broken, but I still am unsure why the bike revs up and down when i turn it on in the 2.5k range, and I'm also unsure why the bike will be stable at 1.3k and then all of the sudden drop to 500 or lower. Any help would be much much appreciated.:)
