jetting question

924 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  SacCityZ
ok, i just put on a new bolt-on and i need to reject (pops upon deceleration, means i'm running lean right?). i've heard all they need to do is "shim the needles" to richen it up so you don't have the pops. do i need to buy a jet kit to fix this or does this not require a jet kit?

i'm hoping to hear a no or if not, anyone know where i could get one nice a cheap? i just bought a track bike and also have collage tuition due beginning of december.

any info in this would be greatly appreciated!

To shim the needles go to a hardware store a buy #4 washers. I usually get brass one. Take the top of the carb off and the needle will be visible. Take the needle out, put the washer(s) on and put it back in. You can also rejet the mains by buying only two jets for about $10 because of the way the Kawasaki's are jeted. Many times you get better top end by going leaner on the mains and richer on the needles. Put the outside jets in the middle and buy two jets one step leaner for the outside.
A more likely cause of poping on decelleration is an air leak into the can caused by a bad gasket. Normally rejetting is not necessary with a slip-on.
Put a rag over the end of the can to seal off the exhaust while the engine is running. See if you can hear a leak around the gasket. Shimming needles is not all that hard but you probably need a factory service manual to help you out. They only cost about $30, or about 30 minutes worth at you friendly local dealer.
