i am currently in the market to get an offroad bike and was wanting to know what the best one was (not brand new though). i am looking for something i am not going to outgrow quickly. i have a '05 zx-6r so i am not new to riding. i was thinking about a kx 125 or maybe a kxf 250. i dont know enough about the differenece between the 2 to make a good call. any suggestions are welcome.

if you ride your streetbike pretty hard and are comfortable doing it, id go with a 250 2stroke or a 450 4stroke.

have you every raced or rode MX before? Or do you plan on going to the tracks at all? If you never rode before and you get a 125 2smoker or 250 4stroke and your not that great its not going to be all that fun trying the technical sections with it cause your going to have to be pinned to clear most of it and all that, the 125 2smokers and 250 4strokes in my opinion shows a lot more rider skill then anything out there cause you have to know how to ride to be fast on most tracks. as for the 250 2stroke and 450 4stroke you can do most sections without all that much skill cause the power is non-stop. id say youd be best with a 450 just cause the powers there all the time and you wont out grow that ever.. just have fun when you need to throw a new top end in or anything. its not like a 2stoke were it takes you 30min to put a frest top end in and only 150 bucks, lol.

riding street and dirt are night and day but both offer a lot of fun. i would almost suggest going with 4-stroke for sure, it will feel more like the ninja in the fact that it doesn't have a HUGE hit in power once you start riding on the pipe. the 4 stroker's power is a lot more linear and natural feeling. like mx9tony said, it takes a lot more skill to ride a 125 or 250F fast, but i've seen guys really adapt to the 250F and go through top ends like crazy when they are constantly riding in the power. i want a 450F eventually not because i need that much power, but it is always there and i won't have to ride in the upper RPM range to lay down some rubber and hopefully give the engine top end a longer life. just my $.02

go for the kx250f dude and you wont be dissapointed. its inbetween the 125 and 250 2 smoke, i rode buddys 05 kx250 smoke and i swear my 08 250f is just as fast, more controlable power and torque for either trails or the track, and both my bike and freinds were stock when compared

Ok, you don't say what you intend to do with this "dirt bike"...

Even if you just limit yourself to Kawi's, there are a shitload of choices. A quick trip to the Kawi site revealed that they currently offer 5 (4) "Off Road" bikes, 5 (2) Motocrossers, and 3 Dual-Sports (2). The numbers in parentheses are how many if you discount the "kids" sizes (below 125cc) and the Versys.

That's 8 choices in green alone (and you can probably STILL find leftover KX125 & KX250 2-stroke MX bikes at a lot of dealers...and there are 3 other jap brands, and several European (KTM, Husaberg, gas-gas, come to mind).

Now that I've got you TOTALLY befuddled (like me), I'll tell you this -

Last year I was in kinda the same boat as you; having ridden for many years, I was getting my off-road fix with my KFX400 sportquad (big fun, btw). But every time we visited the dealership (seemingly to buy ANOTHER bike each time - at one point Susan & I had 8 in the garage; she's so cool...now we're down to 7 :() my eye kept roving over to the KX 250 they had on display... It was on '06 leftover, and just looked like it wanted to go out & tear it up, you know? Well I'd had a 250 oil-burner when I was 17 (many years ago, and it was WAY too much bike for a skinny 140 lb kid like me); and when I found out that Kawi was discontinuing the 125 & 250 2-smokes after '07, I HAD to get it; just to say F*CK YOU to the greenies...lol. Even discounted ($5200), it was a bit too much for me, but Susan got it for my b-day last August, with the proviso that I pay her back for half of it...which I have (did I mention how cool she is??). Anyhow - I got it, and it promptly scared the living crap outta me on the first several rides... VERY peaky powerband, coming on like a light switch. This thing is a pure racing machine - and I'm not planning to MX it; I'm mostly a trail rider. So I added a spark arrester, handguards, and a flywheel weight; Last time I rode it, we "clicked" and it all came back to me. I was wheelie-ing & power sliding all over the place like a kid.

The point of all this is, was it the right bike for my purposes? Probably not - something like the 4-banger KLX350r or KLX450r would probably have been a more practical choice - They're more trail-oriented, have lights, and are probably MUCH easier to ride (but where's the fun in that?). The 350 would also have saved about a grand, and comes w/ a warranty (the MX racers have NO warranty at all). Don't get me wrong - I really enjoy the KX - it has a cachet like no four-stroke - on the trails, it gets lots of positive comments, and nothing compares to that ring-ding exhaust note (except perhaps the cloud of smoke it leaves behind...:D).

So do a little research, and don't let yourself get drawn in by your first impulse. Since you have little or no dirt experience (and it's WAY different from street, trust me), ease of riding is paramount.. also, you don't want something that requires tons of maintenance (like a racer)

Some of them might even be too tall for you to get on (check the seat height on those things! 38" is not uncommon), not have electric start (like mine) or even a kickstand (also like mine).

I know this was long-winded, even for me, (what a surprise) but you'll be much more satisfied if you go in KNOWING what you're looking for in a bike, rather than just getting something with knobbies...

p.s. I'd probably suggest a 4-stroke, since they're more user-friendly, especially if you're not racing it...
