Get a strap wrench. They're like $6. It's just a piece of nylon wrapped around a piece of metal but it makes getting off oil filters super easy.

To get the bolts out I'd suggest some penetrating oil. Not the stuff under your bed (man I need help today). I'm not sure about '03s but on my 95 there's a nut on the back side that's held in place by the mount. Be careful, if you strip that thing you're not going to be happy. Worse comes to worse just put a wrench on the end of that thing to give you more leverage.

Dan...comfortable enough with his manhood to ride a 600.

Newbie frustrated in trying to do some maintenance...

1. Re engine bolts - I tried to remove the engine bolts to mount engine-mounted sliders (from R&G racing), but they won't budge (I'm using the allen key that came with the tools, and I'm turning them counter-clockwise). How do you remove them?

2. Re fairing - I'm trying to remove the left lower fairing to change the oil filter. There are round clips that keep the fairing on in several places. They look like discs with prongs, and a spike goes in the middle to push the prongs out, locking the clip. How do you remove these clips? I was able to remove one by pushing the spike out from the inside, but on some clips, I just can't seem to push the spike out, and on other clips, the angle just makes it difficult to reach inside and push the spike out.

Might as well ask - assuming I can get the fairing out, is there any special technique involved in removing the oil filter?

Needless to say, I'm anxiously waiting for the 03 service manual to come out...!
