Yeah, the 500s aren't bad to learn on but the 250 is idea. I would say you would be riding the 500 around much longer than you would a 250 because you would be bored with a 250 too quickly.
Don't buy a brand new bike, buy one used and if it has scratches that's not a big deal because in getting used to riding you will probably drop it at some point.
Take a safety course so you don't develop bad habits from the beginning.
I learned on a CBR 1100xx. Rode it for 4 years and dropped it once at 0 miles per hour because I forgot to take the theft protection gizmo off of the front break disc. Very embarrassing because there were a million people around.
Advice, don't ride with guys that do crazy stuff. You'll end up doing something stupid just trying to keep up.
like that one noz just start slow dont puch your self and dont let your buddy talk you in to trying someing out side your skill rang but most of all "injoy it"
