I've determined the starter clutch on my bike has cracked and I'm going to attempt to replace it myself. I've never worked on an engine before and this bike is meant to be a project for me to learn how do so. What do I need to know in order to replace this part? From what I've gathered I can pull the clutch basket and oil pan off and don't have to worry about completely splitting the case. Does this seem like the easiest way to do it?

What year bike is this? Sounds like your describing the final drive clutch, and not the starter clutch. How did you determine that it is cracked? You will want a service manual.

It's a 1985. From what I've read of other people having similar problems I determined it was cracked. When I press the starter button the gear on the end of the starter motor turns and you can hear a grinding sound inside the engine. Every now and then it will catch and actually turn the engine over a ways. When the bike is able to start it runs just fine.

Yeah, that sounds like a starter clutch slipping to me also. But when you say "clutch basket" it sounds like your talking about the clutch that you operate with your left hand.
Bear in mind I'm not familiar with your modal. The starter clutch on my bike is on the other side of the engine of where the drive clutch is.
