So i was on my way home the other night. On my route home there are a series of long radius turns that i usually hit hard to practice my technique. Anyway i'm jamming through a turn at about 70mph (in a 45) when i see a car ahead of me going really slow. Right before i'm about to move over a lane and just pass it, i notice that it's a cop. so i hit the brakes fast and ride slowly behind it. The cop is going like 35 and must have noticed that i was coming really fast from behind and just completely slowed down when i saw the cop car. So i continue on my way home slowly behind the cop. All of a sudden the cop kind of swerves into the lane to the left and slows down even more. So i'm forced to have to pass the cop who is now behind me. I can't tell if it's following me since i was only going straight down a normal road. then i turn right into the street that leads into my apartment complex and the cop turns right too. Then I turn left into the apartment complex parking lot and the cop follows. Then I drive around the parking lot making a few more turns to get to my garage and the cop is still following me. I pull into the garage and notice that the cop stops the car right in front of my garage. I'm basically pissing in my pants and just sit there for a minute or two, pretending i'm taking off my gear and checking stuff, hoping the cop just leaves. after a while i just decide to get off the bike and hope for the best.
as i walk towards the cop car a lady officer leans over to the passenger side window and asks me what kind of bike i was riding. she then says that her son wants to get a bike and starts asking all these questions about my bike and bikes in general. we talk for like 10 minutes about what type of bike he should get and how riding can be dangerous, but a lot of it has to do with the maturity of the rider. the cop was really nice and drove off thanking me and said sorry for bothering me. How about sorry for scaring the sh*t out of me!...j/k

anyone else have any stories like this? presumably getting a ticket and then the cop ends up just being curious about motorcycles?

Your stort is not unusual...remember, we are human too....in fact when the ZX10 first came out, I pulled a few over to get a closer look and talk to the owners...after a little while..I had a new '10. As far as an apology for scaring you...I will be the first to admit that a lot of times cops do not realize the effect we have have on normal people. It took my wife coming out on a ride-along to point out to me that a lot peole freak out just knowing a cruiser is behind them!! I grew up in a police family...never had any idea what we do to people...even just driving along!!! I will apologize on their behalf... they obviously just wanted a closer look and some advice..

just curious. you being a cop whats the fastest you've had your 10. Do you think you cut riders more slack being a rider yourself?

i wasn't really upset that she scared me. just messing around. i was actually glad that this happened so i have a story to tell people that shows that all cops aren't dicks. she was really nice and was just genuinely interested and concerned about her son riding a motorcycle.

Funny....u r the first to ask me this.. Yes...I do cut sportbike riders a LOT of slack...in fact, I have never ticketed a sport rider. People riding big ugly Harleys and Honda-Davidsons with no baffles, ape hangers and an old ping-pong ball cut in half and painted balck for a helmet will always get my attention....and if u r wearing gang colours (outlaw gangs) you not only get my attention, you ensure that you will get a ticket if anything is wrong...

Sean

Oh yeah....270km/h (verified by LASER)

So how do you get off pulling over people just for a chit-chat, huh? What if they are in a hurry and have to be someplace? What if their mother is in a hospital and they try to make it there, perfectly legal and all, yet still get pulled over by an asshole cop abusing the power given to him just to check out their ride...

You want a closer look - go to the dealership like everyone else.

I was on my lunch break a couple years back and was waiting at a light. A highway patrol motorcycle was stopped at the same light facing me. He leaned in, looked at my bike across the intersection, and flipped his lights on and made a quick U-turn and pulled to the side of the road.

I'm think, great, what could I possible have violated SITTING STILL.

The light turned green and he pointed at me to pull over.

He wrote me up a ticket for not having mirrors, and then he started asking me what I planned on doing with myself in life. He said I should join the CHP because I had the right attitude and then went off on how he just became a millionaire off of some stock he had bought and he just got to ride his motorcycle around for fun now.

He gave me the company info, something to do with a different type of bullet proof vest and told me I should invest in it. If I hadn't been a broke college student and had some money to throw at it I would have made a lot of money. The stock increased and split several times in the next few months when I looked it up for fun.

Should have taken his advice.

Perhaps I should have clarified...the bikes were pulled over for excessive speed....I don't usually do this for sportbikes...but since they were '10s AND speeding..they were stopped....I know most of the riders in my area so it is never an issue...further...the law states that any vehicle on any highway is subject to stop in order to verify licence, registration and insurance. I will listen to peoples excuses for speeding...(still never ticketed a sport rider...did u miss that?!?) but in all honesty...the law in Ontario does not allow any excuse for speeding...as for asshole cop....you should talk to me b4 you judge me...I have helped numerous people on this forum with all sorts of advice and was even able to get a ticket dropped for a fellow Kawi forum member. Oh yeah...if are actually involved in an emergency...I will help you get there with an escort...no tickets....you seem to have a built-in hatred for cops, so I assume this reply will fall on deaf ears....but really...we are no different then any other profession...mechanics have assholes as do supermarkets, banks.......

Yeah my brother is a trooper here in PA and he pretty much has the same attitude. If your an a**hole than expect him to be one right back.

I think a lot of us forget police officers don't have the least stressful job. How would you like to go to work and have to put up with everyones problems for 40+ hours a week?

No, my ears still work a little. I'm sorry, man, you're right, I'm way too quick with judjing/generalizing/blaming, etc. And thank you for being cool about the argument and replying constructively. You got my respect.

[:M22]You got it all wrong! I don't know much about bikes at all... And my most negative posts are actually quite nice compared to the type of asshole I am in real life:D.

Seriously though, I truly dislike stereotypes, yet as seanmcc noted, I have a very strong one associated with the police. Many things have happened to get me to this point, yet deep inside I feel uneasy about generalizing cops like that. The oddest moments are when I come across seanmcc' types, you know, the kind of cops I thought all cops are when I was growing up... Then something happens, I hear a story, or read a post about another cop screwing up, and BAM - I react. Very immature of me, indeed.

^^^ that is quite possibly the most sensible and truthful post that has ever been made... EVER. It's so easy to stick to your guns and tell everyone to fuck off when you're wrong on a forum, much harder to own up and learn something. *applause*

I've only been pulled over once *knock knock* for lane splitting, he seemed more concerned with my safety and figured a 10 min lecture was better than a ticket, i agreed with him entirely. Man was I nervous though, you don't fuck with the LAPD.

People THINK lane splitting is legal in California. It is NOT legal, it merely isn't SPECIFICALLY prohibited.

You may still be cited for a number of violations, including wreckless driving, unsafe lane change, failure to signal, etc.

While most cops don't do anything, some that enjoy the powertrip can still hassle you over it.

I have tickets (that I've beat in court) to prove you can still get pulled over for doing it, "legal" or not.
