Hi guys just did an oil and filter service on my 2017 650 today. Had a question. I filled up with 1.8L of motul 5100 10w40. The viewing window with engine off and on paddock stand is just st or slightly above the lower line. On the ground and upright it goes to just under the top line on the viewing window. However when I start the engine and after a minute once the bike had done the warm up routine and the revs drop to idle the oil level goes up to almost fill the window, Is this normal behaviour?

Can't remember what it was like before. I would have expected the level to drop. ( I refilled the filter before putting it on and measured 1.8L in total accurately). Oil pressure light is off no warning or anything.

Used to servicing cars for years but first time for a bike. Maybe I'm just worrying about nothing??

It sounds like you might have a bit too much oil in there. Where does the manual state the oil level should be in the sight glass ?

States between the upper and lower level on the sight glass. Doesn't state when cold or warm, also states oil and filter is 1.8 liters when changing which is what I put in.

When cold the oil level is just above the lower minimum, once warm up sequence is done and it goes into normal idle the oil level rises in sight glass to above the maximum line.

For some reason this just doesn't make sense to me. Been servicing my cars for years and when running I would expect the oil level in the sump to drop (I.e. go down in the sight glass, not go up).

It would be really useful if someone with a ninja 650 or z650 could post a picture of thier sight glass when cold and then after the warm up sequence to see if I'm just being paranoid lol.

Nb: dealer was servicing my bike with 10w40 putoline semi synth. The motul 5100 really suits the bike! The shifting is much slicker, the engine feels freer rev wise and slightly smoother. Interested to see how long it will last. I change every 2k because I ride in town stop and go traffic with a weekend blast every now and then.
