I just bought a salvaged zx-6r 02 bike. The bike is from California so in what way is it different from the other 49 states? There is no engine damage just exterior stuff like the fairing, right handle bar, choke lever, and chain. Should I just say fuck it and give it to the shop or do it myself?

fix it up. as long as its only minor cosmetic. any engine work let a shop do it. i found myself in a similar position. i bought a salvaged bike, with a rebuilt title, 01 zx6r with all cosmetic damage. it had dented radiator, broken rear brake pedal, and all fairngs broken. now all i need is the right side fairing and to have all fairings painted. i bought all my fairings of ebay for half the price and saved close to a thousand if not more. i got all my help here at this site by just posting questions. if you need any help just ask. if you do it on your own you will have a better respect for your bike and not rag it out, because YOU built it back up.

Sniper...
Fix it up yourself. Not only will you learn more about your bike but you'll like it more if you do the work yourself. Like Arturo said, buy stoff on eBay. If the fairings aren't to badly damaged, they can be repaired. Check http://www.plastifix.com

As to the differences between a Cali bike and a real bike....
This info applies to the '99 model and may be different for yours...
The Cali models have smog crap on them. If you can, replace the exhaust canister. There's a catalytic converter in there. Also, the Cali model receives smaller carbs, and has a bunch of extra tubing for emissions.

Dude do it yourself, those repairs are easy (Remove and Replace) you can find great deals on ebay and various other places.

The handlebar is about $40 new
Chain is about $150
Choke Lever $$? that depends on what you actually need.

The plastics is where you are going to get it. Try http://www.ronayers.com they seem to have good prices

If you don't live in CALI you should be able to change your headers and exhaust can. I am not sure about the FUEL EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM though. You would need to go to someone who has done this.

I doubt you'll see any noticeable increase in power or a reduction in weight even though you will shed a few pounds and gain a bit more. Nonetheless its not going to that noticeable to justify the cost of the mods

You can remove the smog stuff.
Ivan's has an Air Induction Removal Kit that I believe will take care of a lot of the smog crap.
Removing the smog will probably not make the bike faster but will make it idle smoother. Especially when cold.

I wouldn't mind removing that stuff from my bike either, for simplicity's sake, but the fact of the matter is you wont even feel the difference, its like 1-2hp. As far as smaller carbs? Don't think so, but could be. Pretty sure from what I have read the bike is identical to the 49 state bike, just has evap canister, some vacuum lines and a catalyst in the collector. To get rid of the catalyst, just remember you have to do a full system, not just the pipe.
