[V]OK, here's the deal. New battery, bike will start on fresh charge of when jumped, take the positive cable off and the bike dies. Is this gonna be a bad stator or a bad regulator? It is the difference between $140 and $330 so I wanna make sure, my dealer is somewhat of a dumbass so I figured I'd ask you guys. Thanks

First thing to do would be to check the continuity on the stator windings, on my 01 J2 there is 3 black wires coming out of the LH side cover, follow these until you wind a plug, disconnect and make sure all combinations of the 3 wires shows continuity with a multimeter, then make sure none of these wires shows any continuity to ground.

If the above all appears to be OK then the regulator maybe the cause of your problems :)
