strange noise 1998zx6

anybody had trouble with noise like starter motor staying engaged but isnt doesnt go when clutch pulled in sounds like it comes from bottom end (no jokes please!!) doesent effect performence and only happens at about 2000 rpmis also intermittent any surgestion please
