Quick question. I have a 2000 6R. It runs about 165 degrees on the open road, but when I have to stop in town, the temp raises to 225 degrees before the fans cut on. It seems like the fans would cut on at a lower temp. Is this normal? Suggestion?

Not sure if it's "normal" but those are the same temp ranges mime operates in. A little higher on the low end than yours, around 175-180 and the fan kicks in at about 222 - 225.

It's days like this I wish I still did drugs!

In theory, the fans should start to prevent the water to boil inside the radiator. So, they should start just before the water reaches 100º C (212º F). However, I believe the water may be pressurised inside the radiator, boiling "later" (at higher temperatures), explaining why your fans fire up at 222-225º F.

As I don't have a ZX-6R yet, I cannot tell you about my experience.

Before I had a Transalp, and now I have a Fazer 600. Those are barely naked bikes, so they don't heat up. I don't think I ever saw the Fazer using the fan, except once in the garage.

Anyway, neither the Fazer nor the Transalp have/had digital temperature gauges, so I wouldn't know at what temperature the fans started to work.

About the "running at 165º F", when I test-drived the ZX-6R, it always ran at 72º C (162º F), so I think that's a normal temperature to work.

THEY LET YOU TEST RIDE A NEW 6R?!?!?

I'LL BE DAMNED IF THEY DIDN'T LET ANYONE TEST RIDE A NINJA WHERE I BOUGHT MINE! They said "too much liability if they let anyone (kids) come in and test ride a new ninja". THOSE BASTARDS!!!

If I lose, then you cheated.

Keep in mind he's in Portugal - there is a shop here NYC that advertises you can take your ideal bike out for a test ride, so I went and asked for a test ride on the 2002 R1 and they said that bike is excluded becuase they only have so many and they need every one for customers....

Turns out the only bike you can test ride is not street legal... LOL

Mine kick on at 219 like clockwork. It usually runs about 230 around in traffic, and actually hit 242 back in the summer when it was just a baby. 160's are normal for Denver in the open, then it drops to around 150 on the climb home.

Don't forget that antifreez in the cooling system also keeps the water boiling point higher than 212 degrees. At least that is what I have always been told.

My '01 runs at 69c - 71c on the hi-way.
And I test rode my zx6r before I bought it.
The Kawasaki dealer couldn't have been nicer and as soon as they get the new '03 zx6r I'll be going for test ride.

It looks like our 6R's have a 160 degree thermostat. So while she is getting airflow to the radiator, the thermostat tries to keep the temp above 160. The fan tries to keep her from going over 225.

If I notice she is staying under 160, I always kick her down a gear or 2 to keep the temp around 160.....or that is what I try to convince myself why I do it.

Sure. And there's also a ZX-12R for testing. Of course, if you damage any of the bikes, you have to pay for it...

When I went to test-drive the ZX-6R, the sales person (a young guy, which I've seen sometimes in a local motorcycle hangout, and owns a Aprilia RSV Mille R) came with me, in the ZX-12R, to show me the best curves around, as he was bored in the stand, with nothing to do. I found out he is a pro racer here in Portugal, and he quickly went away with the 12. Later he asked me: "Anything wrong? You stayed so much behind, I was about to turn back to check out..." And I replied: "Nopes, everything's fine. TOO fine. DAMN, I WANT THIS BIKE!!!" eh eh eh

Of course I was going slow in the beginning 'cause I never drived a super-sports before... Everything was new... Still is... I still don't have the bike , I'm trying to sell my Fazer 600. Only after the sale I'm going to buy the ZX-6. I hope I have it in less than a month...

I had trouble with my fan not kicking in so I installed an auxillary switch. I think turning it on manually works out better.

damn girl, I would forget to turn my fan on.....I'm too busy checking out the scenery in town (i.e. hot chics) to even look at my engine temp...
