Its not absolutely necessary but it would make the job much easier if you had a stand. First loosen the axle nut, you will notice the chain adjusters/bolts (one on each side of the swingarm) in front of the axle as well as some marks on the swingarm itself for referance, use a 12mm open end wrench to loosen the inner most nut on the long bolt just a 1/2 turn, then turn the long bolt counter clockwise equally on both sides until your chain freeplay is 1.5" in the middle. Now tighten the axle nut to spec, recheck the adjuster bolts/nuts one last time for tightness AND alignment with the marks on the swingarm and your done.
