Tire Size

834 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  eltorito
This was asked before but I can not find the thread. Here is my question. The factory tire size for my bike (2002 6r) is 120/65 17 up front and 180/55 on back. I can get a set of either 120/70 or 120/60 but no 65 for very cheap ($80). What am I sacrificing by doing this? Help me out with this one Rob!!!

Just to give you all an idea of why I want to find out. If I buy Dunlops D208 120/60 - 180/55 = $288 mounted and balanced
Michellin Pilot Sports 120/65 - 180/55 = $320 mounted and balanced

Try and get the OEM tire size. $30 is not a whole lot amortized over the life of the tire.

120/70 up front will be slightly more stable straight line, slightly less easy for flicking the bike around.

120/60 up front will be slightly less stable at speed/straight line, slightly easier for flicking/cornering.

The 70 profile tire will raise your front a mite over stock. The 60 profile will result in a slightly lower front than stock.

eltorito,

The 120/70 tire gives better straight-line stability, grip at lean, and bump absorption, but also slower steering and less feel than the stock size.

The 120/60 gives quicker steering and better feel, but also less straight-line stability, grip at lean, and bump absorption than the stock size.

If you choose a non-stock size, consider the 120/70 tire. You can quicken its steering by raising the forks 6 mm through the triple clamps, which maintains the stock ride height. If you choose the 120/60 tire and the top end of the inner tube is flush with the upper surface of the handlebar holder, you cannot maintain the stock ride height at the forks.
Thanks a lot for the answer!:D
