If you were to wait for Yoshimura to build their EMS system for this bike you wouldn't need a TRE. You get to program it to whatever mapping you please. Besides, leaving the bike in the fifth gear map is a little unproductive at a high-speed track with a few long straights.

I have never been on a track, but I am thinking of doing some track days this year, now that I have a bike that is worthwhile. Mostly I ride on the streets, so I don't need the top end. The TRE is mostly for the lower gears anyway, doesn't mess with the timing on the top gears, so it won't give anymore on top. It makes all the gears have the ignition advanced like 5th gear. I will probably wait until Yosh had theirs out anyway, but for $30, how can you beat it. Or $3 if I build it myself. My bud said that it was even more noticable than changing gears. I will have to wait until he lets me ride it to see the difference.

TRE or otherwise known as the Timing Retard Eliminator.
quote:from http://users.adelphia.net/~jdcdmc/motorcyclepages/tre.htm
When Suzuki created the fuel injected bikes they programmed the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to retard the ignition timing in the first 3 gears. This goes for GSXR 600s, 750s & 1000s, TLRs, and Hayabusas. I have heard several theories about why they did this. One is that they wanted to limit the power if a squid grabbed a handfull of throttle. Another says they did it for better emissions. Whatever the reason they did it.

Some genius figured out that if you fool the ECU into thinking that it is in a higher gear than third you could eliminate the timing retard. Presto!! the TRE was born.

Several manufacturers make these. You will hear them called Ivan's TRE, G-Pack, or JSD. The Ivan's and G-Pack are way overpriced if you ask me. The JSD, sold by Jeff Wallace on Gixxer.com, comes in a switchable or non-switchable form both for a reasonable price. That's if you don't want to do it yourself.

The ECU gets a signal from a sensor on the bike called the Gear Position Switch (GPS) Each gear has a resistance associated with it. The ECU sees the voltage drop across the resistance and determines when to retard the bikes ignition based on the voltage drop. The Resistances and Voltages are approximated below.
Basically, I was wondering if anyone knew if our bikes had the timing retarded like the zooks, and if so, if there was a place that had the specs on making a TRE or sold one. A bud of mine just put one on his gixxer 750 today and said that it was the best mod he has ever put on a bike. The throttle was crisper and the power was unbelievable for spending only $30. He rolled into it and it came up at 3500 rpm. He says that it usually doesn't come on until 9 or 10 grand like that.
Let me know if you hear anything. You can post it here or e-mail me at [email protected]

True that. If there is anything like it for the 03 fuelies, I would like to see it, or if there is a diagram of how to adjust it. Sounds like it might be a much easier way to wheelie without gearing changes.
