Ive heard from many different people that almost any used bike needs to get a valve adjustment.
seeing that i just bought a 98 zx6r im wondering if thats really true.
how would i know if i need one and if i do is it expensive??

I've done them myself. A little patience, a good service manual and things are golden. Actually my 00 6r I checked at 13000 and again at 22000 and they were still within acceptable tolerances...thus no adjusting....

well really noisy valves (they tap or making a clicking sound) or if the bike idles really bad could mean the valves need adjusting.

the only sure fire way to tell is to actually check them....

and if you take it to someone you know, ask them if you can watch them do it, that way you learn and you also know they do it right...

my 2002 calls for a valve check every 7500 miles....

ofcourse i have heard of bikes with 30,000 miles on them with needing to be adjusted...

I'd say you better check them at 15000 or have someone check them if you never have.
