Need help bike will only go in neutral & first gear

Ok guys I need some help. I have searched with google and looked on YouTube but I can not find a solution to my problem. I bought a 2005 Kawasaki zx-6r at a police impound auction for 550.00. All They tell your about it is if it starts and has a key. After I bought it I noticed it had little to no oil so I added some 1st thing. The PO had tried to fix a hole or something in the oil pan with some kind of epoxy maybe but still has a slow leak. I noticed from the pictures of the bike before was moved at the lot that there was a large oil spot. So I believe the oil leaked out when It was sitting at the lot and hopefully was not rode that way. Anyways I charged up the battery and the bike started up and I drove it around it around in 1st to test it but didn't have a lot of room. When I tried to ride the bike home I discovered that the bike will only go into neutral and first gear. It feels like it's shifting up but will to leave first gear. Btw I can tell the bike has been laid down on its side before on the right and maybe the left. The shifter and linkage does not seem to be bent. Any suggestions on possible simple fixes to try first or how to diagnosed what my issue might be.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

possibly the clutch cable needs tightening a bit if the clutch is binding while you're trying to change gear it wont like it

+1 on adjusting the clutch cable. I would also recommend trying to pull right up into second gear from neutral with the engine off while sitting on the bike, maybe rock it back and fourth and see if it feels like it goes in. If adjusting your clutch and doing what I mentioned doesn't work you may have a more serious issue with either your transmission, or linkages.
