Question to cam, or not to cam

so i'm in the process of rebuilding my bike... and i got to the part where i take off my valve cover and meaure up the valve clearances... and it looks like some are uneven (test is not 100% complete yet, waiting for better feeler guages)

so.. this means i gotta remove the cams to replace the shims... now i'm thinking... if i have the cams out.. i should replace with muzzy race cams...


is this worth it? i mean, i know enough about engines to know cams make a difference but... its 199 per cam.. and u need two.. plus i think you either have to change the exhaust valves, or the exhaust vavlve springs.. not sure which... yet...

i just figure if it makes a difference.. a nice one.. then i'll do it...

to answer future questions.. yes.. i'm installing a jet kit on the way back in.. stage 2... also.. looking to get racing header... or 636 stock... not sure yet... also doing the washer mod... if im doing all this might as well get cams too no? whats the word?

If your that far in then I would suggest taking the head in for some porting/polishing and 3 axis valve job stuff too.

Go all or nothing. $0 or $Infinity.

well.. it seems the porting and polishing are contraversial right now... with all the home made mods... is porting worth it? i know on a car its well worth it... but id ecided against it after reading all that motoman crap... im thinking i should go all the way also... i think if the consensus is that cams make a big difference then ill go ahead and send the head out... might as well do everything except bore it.

porting on todays newer style heads is not as intrusive as it used to be......knocking down bumps and smoothing lines and valve seats is the basic "porting"......it's more polishing these days then anything...the stock heads are well designed

yea i figured... i'm not lookin to go crazy.. i just want to make some modest mods, and replace whatever i take out with performance... but i dont want to mismatch anything...and do all that work/spend money for nothing. 400 bucks for cams better be worth it...

this thread got me to thinking the SAME thing.

when i do finally go to have the valve clearances checked. IF they need adjusted, i think id go ahead and throw some cams in.

i mean...NO extra labor, right. just the parts.

but...are there any profiles that allow the power sooner? i dont care for max power at 15k. but 12k would be nice.

degreeing cams makes the most of the potential......duration, lift.....there are lots of combinations......Kawi makes their reputation on strong motors, alot form the R&D from their cams....not many 600 motors run 316 degrees of intake duration.......Kawasaki's respond to a raise in compression the best.....

blueprinting the motor with tweaks and mods, combined with a custom tune map makes for maximum potential.....you dont have to throw big money into the motor to make them better.....remember they are a mass produced item with factory tolerances all throughout it.......my 006R makes more power then any other 636 we have tested yet... :S

Badassjake has all good points.

Personally, I think cam's are one of the last places to put engine work money. I've had decent results just cleaning up/blending the casting/machining and a 5 angle valve job.

Cam's...generally aftermarket cams will require adjustable sprockets (they will for the 98-02 zx6r)....so you need the tools/know-how for that. So tack on $150 for the sprockets over the cams ($700)....and labor at a shop to set them if you don't have a degree wheel and dial indicator.

I am not even sure if the OEM springs allow for more lift or not...kawi tends to run pretty close to coil up right out of the box. So if you need new springs...thats another 300.

if your goal is more mid-range...just degree'ing the stock cams with a little less overlap is probably the ticket. Even getting the cam's degreed to stock generates gains a lot of times....from the factory I have seen lobe centers off by 7-10 degrees. 35mm flat slides would be a nice mid-range booster too.

Also see Jason's post on the epoxy/smaller port results.....this first "hard evidence" I've gotten to see.
