1997 ZX6R won't start/idle

I let my bike sit for a few months (stupid) and now (unfortunately) I have to trade it in to get my wife a new car...

The bike won't start...the starter works, but it just cranks away. Sometimes it'll turn over, sometimes it'll actually start up. But it only idles for a couple seconds.

Also, when it does actually try to turn over liquid comes out the exhaust when it first turns over a big(ish) splash of it, and smells heavily of gas...so I'm thinking gas in the exhaust right? Is the engine just getting flooded or....?

I'm at a loss and am not very good with carbs, I need to get the bike to the stealership by this coming Monday/Tuesday.....what do I do? I don't have the time nor the experience to tear the carbs apart comfortably.

I just need the sucker to run...btw it was running FINE before I let it sit.....

Thanks so much for your help! And here's hoping for a swift return to Kawi's...as soon as I can talk the wife into letting me get another one.......

Colin

Now that would be awesome and hilarious....but I'd make a fool of myself as I could never quite get the burnout down.

I guess I should clarify...as of the moment it's the best decision, one I made without her knowing until we were about to buy the car. Her old car was an Audi that was costing WAY to effing much to maintain and was just a pain in the ass overall. We've been talking about getting her a new car for awhile and she never mentioned me getting rid of the bike to accomplish that.

But as it stands I figured I can either have the bike (which the insurance just went up...but my income has not and we're struggling as it is)... Or I can have my car, 2001 Trans AM WS6 (which insurance is much lower than the bike). So no matter what I'm going to be alright and have a vehicle I enjoy.

Once our income is where I can get a bike again I'll get one...and she'll like it!

I was thinking plugs might be the problem...well I'll dive in this weekend and get 'er goin'.

Thanks for the help!

Sad my friend, very sad. I would suggest first that you look for the jar on the shelf above the fireplace.....thats where your testicles will be located at after this. Once she knows she beat you, shell do it again and again. I would trade the bike in on another bike.

But if you must get it running, My 97 (track bike) hadnt ran since 2003 or so. I took the carbs off and cleaned em twice, there is a sticky in this section about carb cleaning, cleaned out the fuel filter and ran a bunch of new fuel through the pump. It had new plugs in it, and they were fine. sounds like you fouled your plugs with bad fuel. take em out, clean em or get new ones, and change the fuel in the tank too. You can usually smell it if it went bad.
