Digital guage mod

Hi all.


Life has moved on for me a bit and im going to have to say goodbye to the uk very shortly and move in with family in germany.


whilst discussing this move with my significant other she braught up about me being able to drive in germany which I quickly sorted out and kneejerk said "well the bike speedo does KM so atleast thats not a problem and I dont have to worry about having a left hand drive bike lol".


right up until I actually tried to read the KM guage...dark blue on black background...10/10 design.


Now I know you can get like a little overlay sticker but I hate the idea of it and the clocks on my '98 ZZR600 are in pretty shoddy condition tbh (the clock has a big crack on it and the trip reset button doesnt work) so ideally I would like some shiny new digital clocks that way I can change between mph and kmh whenever...and...y'kno...they're pretty.


Im currently looking at some pretty generic "universal" clocks https://bit.ly/2EaUMgj for example, I assume I will have to do some "creative" wiring and more than likely make a bracket myself.



Tl;Dr I want to know if anyone has upgraded a '98 ZZR600 E from stock clocks to digital if they have any tips or any recommendations. I may well do a write up since I couldn't find anything from googling

never seen anyone mod the gauges on a Gen 2 ZZR.

Guess its up to me then I kid ofc im sure it's not neerly as difficult as it looks should make a good write up when its done, I did eventually find a respectable looking digital cluster with speedo cable input + 2 anciliarys (one for temp because the cluster doesn't do temp monitor and one for battery voltage because symmetry) if anything the hardest thing I can see is going to be welding together a bracket to fit everything on.


It's all arriving in a week or so, so we'll see how it goes.

update/progress

Ok so finally made a decision I went for https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153327877770 which was a bit of a balance of gain vs loss the big gain here is it has a speedo cable input so no need for messing about with magnets also the mph/kmh is switchable and as of my test earlier (night time will have to check again tomorrow morning) is MUCH easier to see.



There is no neutral light which is fine because I always start the bike with the clutch and brake lever pulled so thats fine, what I DIDNT realize is that the oil light/engine light is on a timer it doesn't actually work off the oil pressure sensor which is ok ish because even though it is a massive pain I can just open it up and solder another wire in.


I'm also loosing a temp guage so what I've decided is to put 2 anciliary clocks in 1 for temp 1 for voltage on the battery (becuase symmetry)


fitting was ...tricky it uses the same fitting as the stock cluster so pins needed moving around to preserve original wiring just in case.


There were 8 out of 9 pins in there originally. The 3 I took out because you kinda have to and will require some "creative" wiring, I'm not 100% on how to connect power to as the oringal cluster didn't have one...any ideas would be nice. the small 3 plug from the original has 1 pin for the tachometer connection which is convenient because the new guage has 1 wire for tachometer so that works perfect...fuel gauge too which I understand is a big difficulty with doing this.


The remaining pins in that block required removal with some tweezers and moving around as per pinout on the ebay ad and comparing it to where the original wires lead. However I would like to share 1 quote for the wires because...I just dont even know...


"-Brown / Black: Electric door lock control closed the anode (controlled by the switch of the anode)."


...well first of all the wire is solid black and what it means is "main power activated by ignition switch"...thanks china


What can you do I suppose. Those blue connectors are just the power lines which I connected to the battery for testing and so far everything works so hopefully tomorrow ill have it all on. one thing I will point out is I seem to have gotten unlucky because there was supposed to be a bracket included and I did not get one so I got a 5 refund and...well I have a welder so ill just make a custom bracket for it hopefully all will be done tomorrow and I can show it off
