wiring for swapping to 00-02 style gauges

upgrading 98-99 style gauges to 2000 and up style seems to be a hot topic so I thought I would make this diagram instead of trying to explain it to one person at a time. anyway this is the way the wires need to be put into the (guage) plug for it to work with 00-02 style zx6r and 00-03 style zx9r gauges (which are the same by the way, I've done both)

so anyway this view is looking at the back of the gauge pod and each color wire is where it needs to be once the harness is plugged in. the colors are as close as I could get with my paint program so be very careful looking at them because alot of them are close.

also for those of you who don't already know the wires can be pulled out of the plug and then put into whichever slot needed by using a pick and pushing (carefully) on the tab inside to release the wire. then just push it into where you need it till you here it click and lock itself in. no splicing required. also DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING when you are taking them out, if it doesn't come out easy then your doing it wrong. good luck fellas[8D]

Well since half of northeast is snowed in and this post has been in the making for some time now i guess i should help out just a little with some pics
1 Disconnect the plug from the back of the old guage it has a little tab you can press in and pull with a little force it should come out of the back of the guage.
2 If your smart disconnect the battery unless you like buying new fuses (Common Sense)
3 Now go to napa or some auto parts store and buy a plug Extractor (male)
4 Unlock the wires from the back of the plug by pressing in the little tabs on the side of the plug on each side to unlock the top and the bottom of the plug.
5 Now your ready to take the wires out Insert the plug extractor in the hole of the desired wire you'd like to take out insert gently without to much force Now gently pull the wire and it should slide out with a metal piece on the end make sure that this piece is still connected or you will have hell of time with this mod
6once you have taken all of the wires out now refer to badaszx9r diagram of the wiring or if you'd like refer to 2000-2002 zx6r manual and there you have it Upgraded Guages.)

Note Some pics are blurry so if you need them clearer just pm me

not really any advantages to the newer style, its just that if you swap to the newer style front end plastics then you can no longer fit the old style gauge pod cause its too big. I tried to take some pics but its all too close up to get it clear

you may be able to - the wires should be the same colors or close enough to tell whats what. you may need to buy the right plug though and find a way to mount it.

thanks for the advantages twhitty I never actually rode with the old style gauges.

killa be the first!!

badaszx9r,

i got started on my 98-99 to 00+ conversion(zx6r) and just now realized that the old style gauges wont work. i bought the bike used and it needed all the front parts so i thought i would upgrade the front end, and i bought 00+ parts instead of the old ones(bad idea ...it's starting to look like an expensive mistake now).

the problem is that now im stuck since i cant find any gauges for sale locally or on ebay. where did you get yours? would you mind if i PMd you once i find a set to ask a few more questions?

thanks.

My 1999 speedo reads 190 but i do like the sound of the conversion. how do you fit it to the 1998-1999 bracket that the old one mounts too?
