I wear earplugs for rides that I know will include long stretches at highway speeds. The wind noise gets to be a lot above about 65 mph. I don't use a headset. The engine provides all the soundtrack I need.

Yes. All the same sounds are still there and in approximately the same proportions (ear plugs kill high frequencies a bit better than low), but the overall sound pressure level is less.

I haven't used my Sena in a couple of years, but when I was using it, I also wore earplugs while using it. Even on the highway I didn't have too much of a problem (though I didn't really like using it on the highway, because even without earplugs, it was still a little hard to hear and I didn't like the distraction since it was usually work calling with an issue). Either way, I was concerned that the earplugs would completely kill the sound and render the Sena useless, but to the contrary, I was still able to hear it well enough to make it useful AND eliminated all the nasty road noise that was so uncomfortable to hear while riding!

I use earplugs when riding anything over 10-15 minutes at higher speeds and use a Scala system. IMO it makes it easier to hear the system because it kills the higher frequencies better than the lower. Especially if you're on the phone with a guy. You'll also probably notice you can hear your music more efficiently than with no earplugs.
