So...I recently bought a Ninja 250 2008 from a different state.
I was planning to get it registered so I call my in law about getting it registered. She tells me that I need to have a EPA decal on the bike. Also, that if I tried to bring it to the DMV, they would brand it to never be registered here in CA.

1st thing I did, was RTFM. I only found out that there was a CA model that has a Evaporative Emission Control System (EECS). I also looked at the label information page to see if they would point out where this decal was.
The only thing I found on the bike was the emission information under the seat cowl (the 2 seater). It only says that its US Approved but not CA.

Then, I proceeded to look around the frame of the bike...still no luck.

So...is there really a major difference between a Ninja 250 2008 that's from Washington and one that's from CA? The only thing different that was in the manual was the EECS.

I just hope I'm not SOL just because of a darn sticker. Is there anything I can do  ?

If any forum members with a 08 or 09 250 can show me where it's at or what it looks like.

OK...I read something up from dmv.ca.gov .

According to this image, my bike does not meet CA regulations. Anyone here willing to swap stickers? or something? (This is under the seat cowl). Assuming that they go off this sticker.

honestly, can someone check their label? if you're not from CA and have one, it would be a big help.

They will probably tell you that it must have at least 7500 miles on it before they will allow it. Get a used speedo.

If that is the case, it is time to do some riding!

I wouldn't try to sneak anything by the DMV, since they always have a way of screwing you..... but if miles is all you need, that is a fairly easy solution. It would be best not to give a reason to be pulled over untill it is taken care of.

ok. yes my in law works at the DMV.
she told me that there's no way for them to know if it's internally able to be in CA. So if someone had a 2008 seat cowl that they could lend me or sell me so I can get the bike registered it'd be fine.

Also, you're right about the 7500. My local DMV said it doesn't matter about the label. In-law lives a city away and works at that DMV. So all I need is seat cowl that says CALIFORNIA on it. Can anyone help, lend, or sell a seat cowl to me?

If the local DMV won't do it, I'll just take the trip to in-law to do it.

BTW. for who's wondering or willing to help. The label is underneath the seat cowl.

Have you tried to go to your local Kawasaki dealership and have them run the VIN to see if it is has California emissions? I know we ( I work at a Ford dealership ) can get replacement emissions stickers for vehicles. Possibly could you just order a sticker from the dealer?

the guy I bought it from bought it from a dealership in WA. so I doubt they could give me a sticker.

I thought that as well 1HardRyder4Life. That would be nice if you did have it. I asked my inlaw if that was the only thing they checked and she said yes. I asked her if they would check the inside of the bike as well and she said no. The strangest thing I noticed is that the VIN number on the bike doesn't come up when I try to look it up through autocheck/etc.

Don't mess with CA DMV

Watch it if you simply try trading pans....they have a lot of scanning equipment now and know what they are looking at...looking for every dollar in CA NOW.
They even gave me grief on my 1985 Suzuki SP 600 that was in AZ for 10 years and only 4800 miles (all dirt)....as a "non CA bike" but luckily I bought here in Temple City in 1985 so it had the CA canister for fumes. So they let it go through.
That seat pan has a bar code and numbers you know.
Go ride it until it has 7500 miles plus.....then all bets are off... that's the law in CA.
