key code

i lost all my keys while snowboarding, and need to get a set made.
from searching around, the metal tag that came with the original set is not the key code. kawi dealerships dont have the key codes according to vin, and a locksmith wants $145 to come out and make me one.

i checked around the ignition and found a code stamped on the side of the cylinder, but it is not in the same format as the ones ive heard of online; which is supposedly Z####, the letter z followed by 4 numbers. the code i found was C##HH. is that my key code?

ive also heard that the seat and gas cap locks have less tumblers than the ignition (5 compared to 7), but will the keycodes be the same?

any help would be greatly appreciated. it sucks to lose your only key. thanks in advance.

it came up in random threads during my searches. it couldve been from the new 250 forums or the 03-04, but said that the metal tag has a 4 digit number, and did not match to a locksmiths key code library thing.

either way, i bought my bike used off craigslist and i do not have the original set with that tag.

worst case, removing the lock isn't that bad of a job. ( as long as the steering isn't locked) you might be able to remove something like the helmet or seat lock assembly maybe..

remove the ignition lock & bring it to the locksmith...saves a few bucks.

people who keep bike key with their car keys. do all u guys carry your bike key separately or something? i have a quick disconnect to keep them all together.

anyway, i couldve lost them cliff diving for all its worth. theyre long gone, and helpful advice about where the key code might be or what it looks like would really help.

for anyone that has replaced a key before, was your key code z#### or c##HH or anything along those lines (# represent numerical digits)? if the metal tag is the key code, can some one check theirs and let me know if its letters and numbers, or just numbers? thanks again for any help.

well i got one of those quick disconnecting key rings, so i can take off the bike key quickly.

do you have your metal tag? could you please tell me if it has 2 letters at the end? or if matches the code stamped on the side of the ignition?

im cool with jokes and all, but it really sucks to be me right now. please help me get my bike running. i can give u some good karma or something.
thanks again

update: for future reference, incase anyone else needs this info later.

LocksmithLedger.com - Article - New Kawasaki Ninja 250R Key System

"First, some information about Kawasaki ignition locks. For several years Kawasaki has printed some helpful information on the face of the ignition lock. Look for a “KM” listing. If the listing is KM5 or KM8, then the code series should be Z5001-Z6000. If the listing is KM4, then the code series should be B8001-9000. If the listing is KM10, it is the new Ninja 250R code series."

no problem. its nice to have confirmation of some of the info i found, especially since many of the lost key threads i found ended with the person finding their keys; or just with no conclusion at all.

hopefully itl be of some help to any1 else thats unfortunate enough to lose their only key. its a shitty place to be, and i know from personal experience.

ps: it doesnt seem like it would make it easier to steal these bikes, but if theres a hole in my logic, then i can take it down. just in case.

Is it true thatwhen you go to get another key made you need a red key? Bought my bike used, so no red key. I have the original key number on the original paperwork when the bike was bought. So could I just give the locksmith that z#### code and he can cut me a key or am i just FUCKED! FML!
